Online help to grow-your-own food

Londoners with access to a garden, outdoor space or even a windowsill, can learn how to grow their own food, with a new wave of online workshops, many of which are free or low cost.

Garden Organic’s reports of an 800% increase in sales last month highlighted a resurgence in people interested in growing food since lockdown. To help those turning to the good life, Capital Growth have been running free weekly short sessions covering some of the basics of growing, such as how to deal with pests in your garden organically. They are also offering longer workshops for those wanting to get stuck in with the first one covering Organic Food Growing for Beginners on Wednesday 20 May.

Those wanting to take their interest in growing their own to the next level can also take advantage of other free activities such as Hackney Herbal’s Instagram TV and Sow the City’s weekly webinars, plus you can find helpful guides online, from charities such as the RHS, as well as the Jellied Eel’s gardening advice.

Nat at Hackney Herbal commented “We are really excited to be able to able to run so many workshops online and encourage more people to get growing this spring and summer. So far there has been huge interest and that is really encouraging.” She also hopes that the increased interest in food growing while people are at home will continue well into the future. Nat’s recent session for Capital Growth on making your own herbal teas will shortly be available to watch again for our members.

If you are growing at home or in a community garden in London then you can also register as a member with Capital Growth for free.
