Young Londoners sell their school grown produce at City Hall
Around 18 young entrepreneurs from 4 schools were given the chance to sell their produce and other garden goodies in Capital Growth's School Marketplace, at City Hall on Friday 12th July 2019.
The event gave enthusiastic student marketeers a chance to set up shop in the Map Area of City Hall. Together they creatively dressed stalls to generate a lively market showcasign the efforts of their school gardens and food growing projects. The schools were rewarded for their hard work as each walked away with between £50 and £150 in earnings.
Four competitions were held throughout the day for Best Dressed Stall, Most Innovative Product, Best Sales Team and People’s Choice. The schools created incredible decorations for their stalls and came up with unique products to sell such as lavender eye masks, recycled tea cup candles, summer jams, herb bunches, herbal tea bags, pesto, plant fertiliser from stinging nettles, tomato and chilli plants, and new potatoes, all of which of course made choosing winners especially difficult.
Ultimately, the panel of judges from Capital Growth and GLA named Spa School the winner of the Best Dressed Stall competition for their beautifully green and delicious vegan cake and quiche filled table. The Most Innovative Product went to Trafalgar Infant School for their inventive recycled tea cup candles and lavender and linseed yoga masks. Portway Primary School won Best Sales Team as they showed great teamwork and knowledge of their products, with lots of free tasters.
Over 60 attendees voted in the People’s Choice contest and though the race was extremely close, Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School won the title. The students were fantastic sales people too and their table was really green with lovely posters and pictures of their school garden.
"We have been stall holders for the last 3 years and it is always such an amazing event for our ‘young marketeers!’ All our 5-7 year olds at Trafalgar Infant School help out in our growing space and the Marketplace is a fantastic opportunity for them to see the full cycle of growing, cooking and preparing produce and then selling it.”– Rachel Hutchins, Trafalgar Infant School
